Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating national park, is undoubtedly one among the top tourist attractions in Manipur. The park boasts of the last natural habitat of Brow Antlered Deer, Manipur’s dancing deer which is popularly called Sansai. The park is built in close proximity to Loktak Lake, another top tourist attractions in the state.
Watching flock of Sansai grazing in unique wetland ecosystem is a feast to the eyes of a wildlife enthusiast. The tourists can spot animals like Hog deer (118 in number), Otter, wild boars, water fowls, etc. here. Flocks of many migrated birds which come to the park in between March to November, is another attraction of the park.
Fostering tourism, watch towers and a couple of rest houses are maintained inside the park. This attracts more number of tourists who come to see the most beautiful deer -Brow Antlered Deer, grazing in its natural habitat.
In the beginning years, during 1975, the park had only 14 deer. However the number rose sharply after the area was raised to the status of a national park. Now there are over 150 deer including 25 fawns, 58 stags (male deer) and 69 hinds (female deer) in Keibul Lamjao National Park.
118 Hog deer and 100 wild boars are also there in the park that sprawls across 40 sq. km. Tourists who visit this semi-evergreen forests behold an eco-system that is a perfect combination of aquatic, wetland and terrestrial wildlife creatures. Wide varieties of fish, numerous reptile-species like Viper, Tortoise, Python, Krait, Common Lizard, Cobra, are also seen here.
October to April season is considered as the best season to visit this national park. The visitors can reach Keibul Lamjao National Park by taking out a bus from Imphal, Manipur’s capital city which is around 50 km away from the park.
The early hours of the day as well as the late hours of afternoon are the best time to visit the park. Tourists, who wish to have their visit in the early morning, can have an overnight stay in any nearby hotels or guest houses. Forest Rest House at Keibul Lamjao, Sendra Tourist Centre and Moirang Tourist Centre are a few of the better options for overnight stays.
